Two Glasses, the Same Hand

At the table, at La Posta, a glass of our house Champagne. Six thousand kilometres away, in Uganda's Karamoja region, a tin of powdered milk for a child with no other source of nourishment. These aren't two gestures. It's the same gesture, poured twice.
Pouring a drink for someone is one of hospitality's oldest gestures - perhaps its first. At La Posta we do it every evening, with our house Champagne. But this year that same gesture, unchanged in form, reaches somewhere else too.
In Moroto, in Uganda's Karamoja region, the Charity Sisters Children's Home takes in children aged zero to three from families in situations of extreme vulnerability, together with their caregivers, for as long as it takes to reach a stable condition of health. It's run by missionary sisters who ask nothing directly of anyone - which is why ISP in Africa, present in the area since 2022, carries out regular assessments to make sure food and milk are sufficient. For the youngest children, milk isn't one option among others: it's often the only alternative to breast milk, in a context where food insecurity and hardship among mothers make it common for a newborn to struggle to get enough nourishment.
The mechanism linking the two houses is deliberately simple, almost invisible: two euros from every glass of Champagne served at La Posta go to the project. At the end of the season, the glasses poured are counted and that sum becomes powdered milk for the Charity Sisters Children's Home, through ISP in Africa. A kilo of milk - around 33 bottles, two weeks of nourishment for a child over one year old - costs 3.70 euros. Every glass poured at the table, without anyone noticing, becomes a few days of nourishment for someone we will never meet.
We ask nothing extra of our guests. We don't interrupt dinner with a request. The gesture is already inside the glass, inside what we do anyway, every evening. It works because it adds nothing - it simply links two places that share the same Foundation, La Posta in Tuscany and the Charity Sisters Children's Home in Uganda, through the same everyday act: pouring a drink for someone who needs nourishment.
It's Casa Costa Foundation ETS that turns those counted glasses into milk delivered, season after season. But the gesture that starts it all is ours, every evening, at the table.
